Chronic wounds have become a major concern for healthcare systems, as they have been related to diabetic foot ulcers, venous leg ulcers and pressure ulcers. Oleuropein is an active compound that is extracted from olive leaves and it has the ability to reduce injury to tissues owing to its antioxidant effect, hence improving wound healing. The poor pharmacokinetics of oleuropein have limited its use clinically. This work is aimed toward studying the impact of PEGylated and non-PEGylated nanoliposomes loaded with oleuropein, as a carrier model, on wound-healing activity. The thin film hydration method was used to compose PEGylated and non-PEGylated liposomes, both loaded with oleuropein. The results indicated that each free, PEGylated and non-PEGylated composition was within the limit of optimum nanoliposome characterization. The results showed that non-PEGylated compositions produced higher efficiency in encapsulation (47.09 ± 10.06%) than the PEGylated ones (20.97 ± 10.52%). The PEG-nanoliposomes loaded with oleuropein (PEG-oleu) had mean size, charge and polydispersity index of 129.35 nm, -9.55 mV and 0.1010, respectively. The scratch assay results proved that PEGylated liposomal compositions have a more rapid wound-healing activity than non-PEGylated ones at different time intervals at 0, 2, 24 and 28 h.

Olive leaf extract is a valuable source of phenolic compounds; primarily, oleuropein (major component) and rutin. This natural olive leaf extract has potential use as a therapeutic agent for cancer treatment. However, its clinical application is hindered by poor pharmacokinetics and low stability. To overcome these limitations, this study aimed to enhance the anticancer activity and stability of oleuropein and rutin by loading them into PEGylated Nano-phytosomes. The developed PEGylated Nano-phytosomes exhibited favorable characteristics in terms of size, charge, and stability. Notably, the anticolonic cancer activity of the Pegylated Nano-phytosomes loaded with oleuropein (IC50=0.14 µM) and rutin (IC50=0.44 µM) surpassed that of pure oleuropein and rutin alone. This outcome highlights the advantageous impact of Nano-phytosomes to augment the anticancer potential of oleuropein and rutin. These results present a promising pathway for the future development of oleuropein and rutin Nano-phytosomes as effective options for passive tumor-targeted therapy, given their improved stability and efficacy.

The synthesis of reliable biological nanomaterials is a crucial area of study in nanotechnology. In this study, Emericella dentata was employed for the biosynthesis of AgNPs, which were then combined with synthesized biochar, a porous structure created through biomass pyrolysis. The synergistic effects of AgNPs and biochar were evaluated through the assessment of pro-inflammatory cytokines, anti-apoptotic gene expression, and antibacterial activity. Solid biosynthesized AgNPs were evaluated by XRD and SEM, with SEM images revealing that most of the AgNPs ranged from 10 to 80 nm, with over 70% being less than 40 nm. FTIR analysis indicated the presence of stabilizing and reducing functional groups in the AgNPs. The nanoemulsion's zeta potential, hydrodynamic diameter, and particle distribution index were found to be -19.6 mV, 37.62 nm, and 0.231, respectively. Biochar, on the other hand, did not have any antibacterial effects on the tested bacterial species. However, when combined with AgNPs, its antibacterial efficacy against all bacterial species was significantly enhanced. Furthermore, the combined material significantly reduced the expression of anti-apoptotic genes and pro-inflammatory cytokines compared to individual treatments. This study suggests that low-dose AgNPs coupled with biochar could be a more effective method to combat lung cancer epithelial cells and pathogenic bacteria compared to either substance alone.

The epigenetic silencing of tumor suppressor genes (TSGs) is critical in the development of chronic myeloid leukemia (CML). SHP-1 functions as a TSG and negatively regulates JAK/STAT signaling. Enhancement of SHP-1 expression by demethylation provides molecular targets for the treatment of various cancers. Thymoquinone (TQ), a constituent of Nigella sativa seeds, has shown anti-cancer activities in various cancers. However, TQs effect on methylation is not fully clear. Therefore, the aim of this study is to assess TQs ability to enhance the expression of SHP-1 through modifying DNA methylation in K562 CML cells. The activities of TQ on cell cycle progression and apoptosis were evaluated using a fluorometric-red cell cycle assay and Annexin V-FITC/PI, respectively. The methylation status of SHP-1 was studied by pyrosequencing analysis. The expression of SHP-1, TET2, WT1, DNMT1, DNMT3A, and DNMT3B was determined using RT-qPCR. The protein phosphorylation of STAT3, STAT5, and JAK2 was assessed using Jess Western analysis. TQ significantly downregulated the DNMT1 gene, DNMT3A gene, and DNMT3B gene and upregulated the WT1 gene and TET2 gene. This led to hypomethylation and restoration of SHP-1 expression, resulting in inhibition of JAK/STAT signaling, induction of apoptosis, and cell cycle arrest. The observed findings imply that TQ promotes apoptosis and cell cycle arrest in CML cells by inhibiting JAK/STAT signaling via restoration of the expression of JAK/STAT-negative regulator genes.

BACKGROUND/OBJECTIVE: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is mainly characterized by amnesia that affects millions of people worldwide. This study aims to explore the effectiveness capacities of bee venom (BV) for the enhancement of the memory process in a rat model with amnesia-like AD. METHODS: The study protocol contains two successive phases, nootropic and therapeutic, in which two BV doses (D1; 0.25 and D2: 0.5 mg/kg i.p.) were used. In the nootropic phase, treatment groups were compared statistically with a normal group. Meanwhile, in the therapeutic phase, BV was administered to scopolamine (1mg/kg) to induce amnesia-like AD in a rat model in which therapeutic groups were compared with a positive group (donepezil; 1mg/kg i.p.). Behavioral analysis was performed after each phase by Working Memory (WM) and Long-Term Memory (LTM) assessments using radial arm maze (RAM) and passive avoidance tests (PAT). Neurogenic factors; Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), and Doublecortin (DCX) were measured in plasma using ELISA and Immunohistochemistry analysis of hippocampal tissues, respectively. RESULTS: During the nootropic phase, treatment groups demonstrated a significant (P < 0.05) reduction in RAM latency times, spatial WM errors, and spatial reference errors compared with the normal group. In addition, the PA test revealed a significant (P < 0.05) enhancement of LTM after 72 hours in both treatment groups; D1 and D2. In the therapeutic phase, treatment groups reflected a significant (P < 0.05) potent enhancement in the memory process compared with the positive group; less spatial WM errors, spatial reference errors, and latency time during the RAM test, and more latency time after 72 hours in the light room. Moreover, results presented a marked increase in the plasma level of BDNF, as well as increased hippocampal DCX-positive data in the sub-granular zone within the D1 and D2 groups compared with the negative group (P < 0.05) in a dose-dependent manner. CONCLUSION: This study revealed that injecting BV enhances and increases the performance of both WM and LTM. Conclusively, BV has a potential nootropic and therapeutic activity that enhances hippocampal growth and plasticity, which in turn improves WM and LTM. Given that this research was conducted using scopolamine-induced amnesia-like AD in rats, it suggests that BV has a potential therapeutic activity for the enhancement of memory in AD patients in a dose-dependent manner but further investigations are needed.

Alzheimer's disease is regarded as a common neurodegenerative disease that may lead to dementia and the loss of memory. We report here the nootropic and anti-amnesic effects of both peppermint and rosemary oils using a rat model of scopolamine-induced amnesia-like AD. Rats were administered orally with two doses (50 and 100 mg/kg) of each single oil and combined oils. The positive group used donepezil (1 mg/kg). In the therapeutic phase, rats were administered scopolamine (1 mg/kg) through the oral administration of oils. During the nootropic phase, both oils showed a significant (p < 0.05) decrease in radial arm maze latency times, working memory, and reference memory errors compared with the normal group, along with significant (p < 0.05) enhancements of long-term memory during the passive avoidance test. Therapeutic phase results revealed significant enhancements of memory processing compared with the positive groups. In the hippocampus, oils exhibited an elevation of BDNF levels in a dose-dependent manner. Immunohistochemistry findings showed increased hippocampal neurogenesis suppressed by scopolamine in the sub-granular zone, and the anti-amnesic activity of single oil was enhanced when the two oils combined. Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GCMS) of the two oils revealed sufficient compounds (1,8-Cineole, α-Pinene, menthol and menthone) with potential efficacy in the memory process and cognitive defects. Our work suggests that both oils could enhance the performance of working and spatial memory, and when combined, more anti-amnesic activity was produced. A potential enhancement of hippocampal growth and neural plasticity was apparent with possible therapeutic activity to boost memory in AD patients.

BACKGROUND: Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are attractive substrates for new medicinal treatments. Biochar is pyrolyzed biomass. Its porous architecture allows it to hold and gather minuscule particles, through which nanoparticles can accumulate in its porous structure. This study examined AgNPs' antibacterial and anticancer properties alone and combined with biochar. METHODS: The fungus Emericella dentata was responsible for biosynthesis of AgNPs. The characterization of AgNPs using STEM images and a Zetasizer was carried out. Accordingly, the antibacterial and antiproliferation activity of AgNPs and biochar was studied using MIC and MTT assays, respectively. To evaluate the antiangiogenic and anti-inflammatory effects of AgNPs with biochar, VEGF and cytokines including TNF alpha, IL-6 and IL-beta were tested using an ELISA assay. RESULTS: The size of the AgNPs ranged from 10 to 80 nm, with more than 70% of them being smaller than 40 nm. The combination of AgNPs and biochar enhanced the antibacterial activity against all tested bacteria. Furthermore, this combination showed antiproliferative properties against HT29 cancer cells with high selectivity to fibroblasts at low concentrations. AgNPs with biochar significantly reduced VEGF and proinflammatory cytokine expression levels. CONCLUSIONS: Biochar and AgNPs may be novel treatments for bacteria and colorectal cancer cells, according to the current findings.

Traditional healers are often practiced in rural areas owing to cultural beliefs and are known to provide various forms of healthcare and home remedies. Patients in the Mediterranean region rely on traditional medicine to cure a variety of health concerns, like skin burns. This study was conducted to identify the various practices used by traditional healers for treating skin burns. The survey was conducted in 18 Arab countries, including Syria, Iraq, Jordan, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, United Arab Emirates, Algeria, Bahrain, Palestine, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Lebanon, Yemen, Tunisia, Oman, Morocco, and Sudan. Between September 2020 and July 2021, an online questionnaire was administered to 7530 participants from 12 Asian and 5 African countries. The survey was designed to gather information from common medicinal plant users and herbalists on their practices as specialists in using various herbal and medicinal plant products for diagnosis and treatment. Among the participants, 2260 had a scientific background in plant application, and the study included one phytotherapeutic professional. The crude-extraction technique was favored, by Arabic folk, for plant preparation over the maceration and decoction method. Olive oil was the most commonly used product among participants as an anti-inflammation and for scar reduction. Aloe vera, olive oil, sesame, Ceretonia siliqua, lavender, potato, cucumber, shea butter, and wheat flour are used as crude drugs to reduce pain because of their analgesic and cooling effects. The present study is the first database of medicinal plants with burn-healing properties conducted in Arab countries. These plants can be employed in the search for new bioactive substances through pharmacochemical investigations, as well as in the development of new formulations containing a combination of these plants.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the current study was to determine whether there is an association between alkaptonuria (AKU) and urinary tract infection (UTI) by exploring the bacterial quality of the urinary tract, as most of the patients with AKU present with frequent occurrence of urinary tract symptoms such as incomplete emptying of urinary bladder, dysuria and nocturia. METHODS: Study samples were collected from 22 participants; 9 from patients with AKU, 9 from individuals who were AKU carriers, and 4 people served as control. Confirmation of AKU diagnosis was established by the ferric chloride test and quantitative determination of urinary homogentisic acid (HGA) levels. RESULTS: In the ferric chloride test, the urine samples of AKU patients showed a characteristic black ring upon addition of few drops of ferric chloride solution. During urinary HGA determination, patients with AKU had increased levels of urinary HGA as compared to carriers and controls. The following 10 bacterial species were isolated from the urinary tract of AKU patients, carriers and controls: Sphingomonas paucimobilis, Escherichia coli, Francisella tularensis, Staphylococcus hominis, Staphylococcus haemolyticus, Leuconostoc mesenteroides, Dermacoccus nishinomiyaensis, Kytococcus sedentarius, Serratia fonticola and Granulicatella adiacens. The presence of S. paucimobilis was found in three male patients, and one female each from the carrier and control groups. Almost all study samples were positive for D. nishinomiyaensis and K. sedentarius. S. fonticola and G. adiacens were found only in AKU carrier females. CONCLUSIONS: The results deduced that males show symptoms of arthritis early and more severely than females and by this it appears that there is an association between these symptoms and the percentage of bacterial infection in males that requires more accurate diagnosis and treatment to clarify such relationship. In the current study, males (patients, carriers, and controls) were more likely to have bacterial infections than females (64% vs. 36%). The 16 and 2 bacterial isolates, detected in 7 males and 2 females AKU patients, respectively, revealed that male AKU patients had a 2.3-fold greater rate of bacterial infection than female AKU patients. Therefore, further studies are warranted to investigate if there's any relationship between higher incidence of bacterial infections and development of AKU-related clinical symptoms in the male population.

The aim of this study was to characterize cycling hypoxia-induced changes in the expression of metabolism-related genes in the pancreatic cancer cell line PANC1. PANC1 cells were exposed to either 7 h cycles of hypoxia every other day for 20 cycles (cyclic acute hypoxia), or for 72 h cycles of hypoxia once a week for 5 cycles (cyclic chronic hypoxia). Changes in gene expression were profiled using reverse transcription-quantitative PCR and compared to cells cultured under normoxic conditions. Western blotting analysis confirmed upregulation of HIF1-α, glucose-6-phosphate isomerase, and ribokinase at the mRNA level. Upregulation in genes encoding enzymes involved in glycolysis was greater in cells cultured under cyclic acute hypoxia compared with cells cultured under chronic hypoxia including hexokinase2 and phosphoglycerate kinase 1. Genes encoding the pentose phosphate pathway (PPP) enzymes (transketolase and transaldolase) were upregulated to a similar degree. The expression of genes encoding pyruvate dehydrogenases that block pyruvate flow to the TCA cycle was significantly upregulated. Thus, exposure of PANC1 cells to acute hypoxia resulted in the upregulation of genes that shift the metabolism of cells towards glycolysis and the pentose phosphate pathway (PPP) in adaptation to hypoxic stress.

(1) Background: Chronic myeloid leukemia is defined as the neoplastic development of mostly myeloid cells in the bone marrow. Several treatments, including chemotherapy, radiation, hormone treatment, and immunological therapy, can be used to control this condition. The therapeutic impact on leukemic individuals varies, and the response to therapy varies between patients due to disease heterogeneity. The primary goal of this study is to compare the effects of single and Imatinib (IM) and Hydroxyurea (HU) combined treatment on hematological parameters and gene expression in CML patients. (2) Methods: This study was conducted on 51 patients, with chronic myeloid leukemia, who were admitted to Al-Basher hospital in Amman, Jordan, for follow-up. Their hematological parameters were checked and gene expression was measured for (BCL2, PP2A, CIP2A, and WT1). (3) Results: The BCL2 gene was found to be less expressed in both IM and (HU + IM) treatments as compared to the HU group alone, while PP2A gene expression was raised. Such a thing indicates that the outcome of the combined therapy method is not ideal, since PP2A activation causes CML cells to move toward the blast crisis stage. Furthermore, CIP2A gene expression revealed that IM and (HU + IM) had the same therapeutic effect and were more successful in CML patients than HU alone. With regards to the treatment effect on hematological parameters, notably in CML patients in later stages, the combination therapy (HU + IM) raised lymphocyte count, indicating a greater response to the treatment. When compared to single medicines, the combination treatment reduced the proportion of neutrophils to normal reference ranges. Platelet counts, on the other hand, dramatically decreased in both IM and (HU + IM). (4) Conclusion: Because the studied genes (BCL2, PP2A, CIP2A, and WT1) are participating in cell proliferation and death, the findings show that the examined genes are significant to understand the efficacy of various therapies. Furthermore, it was found that there was a clear effect of the clinic-based strategic treatment on hematological indicators such as WBCs, lymphocytes, neutrophils, and platelet counts.

Phenol is a major worry pollutant resulting from industrialized manufacturing and chemical reactions. The growth kinetics and biodegradation of phenol were initially investigated using C. flaccumfaciens, a recently identified plant growth stimulating bacterium. Based on the Haldane inhibition model, Haldane's growth kinetics inhibition coefficient (Ki), half-saturation coefficient (Ks), and the maximum specific growth rate (max) for phenol-dependent growth kinetics were estimated to be 329 (mg/L), 9.14 (mg/L), and 1.05 (h-1), respectively. With a sum of squared error (SSR) of 1.36 × 10-3, the Haldane equation is well adapted to empirical data. The improved Gombertz model also accurately predicts phenol biodegradation trends. The rate of phenol biodegradation and the lag time both increased as the initial phenol concentrations were increased. C. flaccumfaciens growth and phenol biodegradation were best achieved at a pH of 7.0 at a temperature of 28 °C incubation. A phenol biodegradation mechanism by C. flaccumfaciens has been proposed. In conclusion, this study revealed the ability of C. flaccumfaciens to promote plant growth and biodegrade phenol simultaneously. This could aid in rhizoremediation and crop yield preservation in phenol-stressed conditions.

BACKGROUND: Ephedra foeminea is known in Jordan as Alanda and traditionally. It is used to treat respiratory symptoms such as asthma and skin rashes as an infusion in boiling water. The purpose of this study was to determine the antidiabetic property of Ephedra foeminea aqueous extract in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rats. METHODS: The aqueous extract of Ephedra foeminea plant was used to determine the potential of its efficacy in the treatment of diabetes, and this extract was tested on diabetic rats as a model. The chemical composition of Ephedra foeminea aqueous extract was determined using liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS). Antioxidant activity was assessed using two classical assays (ABTS and DPPH). RESULTS: The most abundant compounds in the Ephedra foeminea extract were limonene (6.3%), kaempferol (6.2%), stearic acid (5.9%), ß-sitosterol (5.5%), thiamine (4.1%), riboflavin (3.1%), naringenin (2.8%), kaempferol-3-rhamnoside (2.3%), quercetin (2.2%), and ferulic acid (2.0%). The antioxidant activity of Ephedra foeminea aqueous extract was remarkable, as evidenced by radical scavenging capacities of 12.28 mg Trolox/g in ABTS and 72.8 mg GAE/g in DPPH. In comparison to control, induced diabetic rats treated with Ephedra foeminea extract showed significant improvement in blood glucose levels, lipid profile, liver, and kidney functions. Interleukin 1 and glutathione peroxidase levels in the spleen, pancreas, kidney, and liver of induced diabetic rats treated with Ephedra foeminea extract were significantly lower than in untreated diabetic rats. CONCLUSIONS: Ephedra foeminea aqueous extract appears to protect diabetic rats against oxidative stress and improve blood parameters. In addition, it has antioxidant properties that might be very beneficial medicinally.

Background and Objectives: Nanoscience is one of the most important branches of modern science, which deals with the knowledge, structure, and properties of nanoparticles. This study aimed to investigate the ability of an airborne fungus (Aspergillus flavus) to synthesize silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) and to test the antibacterial activity of the synthesized AgNPs. Materials and Methods: The confirmation of AgNPs synthesis and the characterization of their properties were done using UV-Vis spectrophotometer, Zeta potential, Zeta sizer, FT-IR, and XRD analyses. The antibacterial activity was determined using broth microdilution method. Results: The findings showed that the average diameter of the resultant AgNPs was 474.2 nm with a PDI value of 0.27, and the zeta potential was -33.8 mV. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) revealed that the AgNPs were regular and spherical in shape. TEM micrographs demonstrated that the AgNPs were smaller than those that were observed by DLS examination because the drying process resulted in particle shrinkage. The average size of AgNPs were less than 35 nm. The AgNPs exhibited a remarkable antibacterial activity against K. pneumoniae, E. coli, E. cloacae, S. aureus, S. epidermidis, and Shigella sp., and the MIC values ranged from 25 to 100 µg/mL. However, an exception was P. aeruginosa in which its MIC was >125 µg/mL. Conclusion: The results suggest that, the biosynthesized AgNPs by A. flavus could be utilized as a source of potent antibacterial agents in medicine and biotechnological applications.

BACKGROUND: This study sought to determine whether (1) evidence is available of interactions between anodal tDCS and oscillated tDCS stimulation patterns to increase the power of endogenous brain oscillations and (2) the frequency matching the applied anodal otDCS's frequency and the brain's dominant intrinsic frequency influence power shifting during stimulation pattern sessions by both anodal DCS and anodal oscillated DCS. METHOD: Rats received different anodal tDCS and otDCS stimulation patterns using 8.5 Hz and 13 Hz state-related dominant intrinsic frequencies of anodal otDCS. The rats were divided into groups with specific stimulation patterns: group A: tDCS-otDCS (8.5 Hz)-otDCS (13 Hz); group B: otDCS (8.5 Hz)-tDCS-otDCS (13 Hz); group C: otDCS (13 Hz)-tDCS-otDCS (8.5 Hz). Acute relative power changes (i.e., following 10 min stimulation sessions) in six frequency bands-delta (1.5-4 Hz), theta (4-7 Hz), alpha-1 (7-10 Hz), alpha-2 (10-12 Hz), beta-1 (12-15 Hz) and beta-2 (15-20 Hz)-were compared using three factors and repeated ANOVA measurement. RESULTS: For each stimulation, tDCS increased theta power band and, above bands alpha and beta, a drop in delta power was observed. Anodal otDCS had a mild increasing power effect in both matched intrinsic and delta bands. In group pattern stimulations, increased power of endogenous frequencies matched exogenous otDCS frequencies-8.5 Hz or 13 Hz-with more potent effects in upper bands. The power was markedly more potent with the otDCS-tDCS stimulation pattern than the tDCS-otDCS pattern. SIGNIFICANCE: The findings suggest that the otDCS-tDCS pattern stimulation increased the power in matched intrinsic oscillations and, significantly, in the above bands in an ascending order. We provide evidence for the successful corporation between otDCS (as frequency-matched guidance) and tDCS (as a power generator) rather than tDCS alone when stimulating a desired brain intrinsic band (herein, tES specificity).

One of the main organic pollutants that could result from industrial products and chemical transformations is phenol. In the current study, the kinetics of Serratia odorifera, which was isolated from arable soil, was studied by growing it on broth minimal medium spiked with phenol as only carbon source and energy. The newly isolated plant growth-promoting bacterium (PGPB), S. odorifera, was used for the first time for phenol biodegradation. The growth kinetics parameters (phenol-dependent) including maximum specific growth rate (µmax), half-saturation coefficient (Ks), and the Haldane's growth kinetics inhibition coefficient (Ki), were tested via Haldane inhibition model and resulted on the 0.469 (h -1), 26.6 (mgL-1), and 292 (mgL-1), respectively. The sum of squared error (SSR) of 4.89 × 10-3 was fitted to the experimental data by Haldane equation. The results of phenol biodegradation were fitted into the modified Gombertz model. The increase of phenol concentrations led to increases in both the rate of phenol biodegradation and lagging time. The optimal phenol biodegradation and bacterial growth obtained by S. odorifera, were at 28 °C incubation temperature and a pH of 7.0. The pathway of phenol biodegradation by S. odorifera was proposed in the current study to provide a new insight into synchronization of phenol biodegradation and plant growth-promoting bacteria. This may play an important role in remediation of phenol-contaminated soil besides promoting the plant growth, thus lessening the plant stress.

OBJECTIVES: This study was aimed at comparing the predictors of health-promoting lifestyle behaviors between smoking and nonsmoking medical students at An-Najah National University located in Palestine. METHODS: A descriptive cross-sectional study was performed during the academic year 2017/2018. Medical students were asked to complete a self-reported questionnaire that involved the predictors of Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile-II. With the use of a suitable available sample composed of a total of 430 medical students, 400 had successfully completed the questionnaire and were included in the study. The data was analyzed by using SPSS version 24 software. RESULTS: The sample included 400 medical students with a mean age of 18.7 years, 311 (77.7%) were females, and 89 (22.3%) were males. The prevalence of smokers in the sample was 110 (27.5%). For the health status of over half the students, 211 (52.8%) were excellent. The total HPLP-II score for smoking students resulted to be significantly lower in comparison to nonsmoking students (131.2 versus 135.7). This significant difference was clear in the interpersonal relation subscale (25.6 versus 26.8) for smoking and nonsmoking students, respectively. The score differences in other subscales were generally lower in smoking students. However, these differences were not consistent with statistical significance. CONCLUSION: The significant lower total Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile-II score in smoking students necessitates the urgent need for awareness programs, not only towards smoking but also on how to enhance student health-promoting lifestyle behaviors.

Breast cancer (BC) is among the most prevalent type of malignancy affecting females worldwide. BC is classified into different types according to the status of the expression of receptors such as estrogen receptor (ER), human epidermal growth factor receptor 2 (HER2), and progesterone receptor (PR). Androgen receptor (AR) appears to be a promising therapeutic target of BC. Binding of 5α-dihydrotestosterone (DHT) to AR controls the expression of microRNA (miRNA) molecules in BC, consequently, affecting protein expression. One of these proteins is the transmembrane glycoprotein cluster of differentiation 44 (CD44). Remarkably, CD44 is a common marker of cancer stem cells in BC. It functions as a co-receptor for a broad diversity of extracellular matrix ligands. Several ligands, primarily hyaluronic acid (HA), can interact with CD44 and mediate its functions. CD44 promotes a variety of functions independently or in cooperation with other cell-surface receptors through activation of varied signaling pathways like Rho GTPases, Ras-MAPK, and PI3K/AKT pathways to regulate cell adhesion, migration, survival, invasion, and epithelial-mesenchymal transition. In this review, we present the relations between AR, miRNA, and CD44 and their roles in BC.

Breast cancer (BC) is the most frequent type of malignancy affecting females worldwide. Molecular-based studies resulted in an identification of at least four subtypes of breast carcinoma, including luminal A and luminal B, Human growth factor receptor (HER-2)-enriched and triple-negative tumors (basal-like and normal breast-like). A proportion of BC cases are of the triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) type. TNBC lacks the expression of estrogen receptor (ER), progesterone receptor (PR), and HER-2, and is known to express androgen receptor (AR) at considerable levels. AR has been shown to promote the progression of TNBC. However, the exact mechanisms have yet to be unraveled. One of these mechanisms could be through regulating the expression of microRNA (miRNA) molecules, which play an important regulatory role in BC through post-transcriptional gene silencing. Activation of AR controls the expression of miRNA molecules, which target selective mRNAs, consequently, affecting protein expression. In this review we attempt to elucidate the relations between AR and miRNA in TNBC.
